News at Noon, a program sponsored jointly by the Current and the New York Times with assistance from the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Student Life, is designed to create discussions about current events between faculty and students. Students: please swipe your ID at a College Readership News bin and bring a New York Times to News at Noon. The New York Times, a sponsor of the American Democracy Project, is buying pizza for the first 25 students in the room. Faculty members are invited to bring a lunch and join the forum.

UMSL's Annual Civic Engagement Day
 

Each spring, a variety of civic and community engagement activities are planned to call attention to the many ways that UMSL is engaged in the community. These programs are organized and cosponsored by the Provost's Steering Committee for Civic Engagement, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Office of Student Life.

Constitution Day
 

Constitution Day is an opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge of the Constitution at a time when constitutional issues, from privacy to presidential power, confront the nation daily. The federal government now requires educational institutions to observe the signing of the Constitution to commemorate the anniversary date of September 17, 1787.

2011 Constitution Day
Wednesday, September 14, 2011, MSC-Century Rooms A & B, 12:15 - 1:30 PM. The program commemorates the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and explores the constitutional issues related to living and governing in a post 9/11 world.

The campus community is welcome to this event and two others:

  • A 9/11 Reflection Room in 315 MSC will be open Monday through Thursday, September 12 - 15 to share memories and honor the victims of 9/11.
  • Last Man Down: A Fireman's Story brings Richard Picciotto, a FDNY Battalion Commander in Manhattan, to the J.C. Penney Auditorium on September 15 at 7:00 PM. Chief Picciotto's gripping, first-person account conveys a firefighter's view of the 9/11 World Trade Center catastrophe and emergency response.

American Constitution Society for Law and Policy (ACS)
ACS is engaged in a multi-year initiative, the Constitution in the 21st Century, to promote positive, much-needed change in our legal and policy landscape. The project brings together scholars and practitioners to formulate and advance a progressive vision of our Constitution and laws that is intellectually sound, practically relevant and faithful to our constitutional values and heritage. The centerpiece of the project is a series of issue groups focused on discrete areas of law and policy, through which a wide range of members will develop, communicate and popularize progressive ideas through papers, conferences and media outreach.

Fight Back Teach-In

The first half of the teach-in will feature a stream of a national discussion with moderators Cornell West (African American Studies, Princeton University) and
Frances Fox Piven (sociology and political science, Graduate Center, City University of New York). the second half of the event will be our discussion of the issues and what, if anything, students and facultywould like to do next.
